The Executive Director is responsible for the overall administration, management and leadership of Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland (FAKH) in pursuit of FAKH’s mission, vision, goals and objectives as established by the Board of Directors. This includes fiscal accountability; personnel management; resource development (food and funds); operations management, public relations, advocacy and compliance with applicable laws, regulations, funding requirements, policies and procedures. In addition, the Executive Director is charged with the financial health and integrity of the organization.
Essential Functions:
Administration and Board Liason
- Proposes policies for Board of Directors’ approval; administer approved policies.
- Develops annual work plans in conjunction with the strategic plan of the Board; regularly report to the Board on program results and utilization of resources.
- Assists and meets with the Board of Directors at all regularly scheduled meetings, special meetings, and committee meetings as directed.
- Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensure open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic and impact performance to achieve long and short-term goals and objectives.
- With the Board Chair, enable the board to govern FAKH properly and facilitate a positive relationship between the Board and staff.
Personnel Management
- Organizes, administers and leads an effective and efficient Board approved staff organization in order to efficiently and effectively deliver services.
- Lead the effort to build a diverse multi-cultural workforce that reflects our FAKH service area by recruiting, hiring developing and retaining key talent.
- Performs all personnel management functions, either directly or through delegation, all employees and activities of FAKH according to the established procedures or policies of the Board and consistent with all applicable laws and regulations.
- Administers personnel policies and salary schedules as established by the Board of Directors.
- Oversees annual performance reviews and the creation of clear and measurable goals for all employees in alignment with FAKH Strategic Plan.
- Assures appropriate direction, supervision, retention and recognition of volunteers.
Financial Management
- Prepares and seeks Board approval for the organization’s annual operating and capital budget, administers it and manages FAKH within the parameters of the budget.
- Provides the Board with reliable and timely information on the fiscal condition of FAKH.
- Ensures all financial records of FAKH in a manner that is consistent with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).
- Ensure an annual independent financial audit is performed and the results are communicated out to the Board, Feeding America and other key stakeholders.
- Ensures sufficient internal cash controls are in place and enforced.
Operations and Food Supply
- Continually evaluates the effectiveness and efficiency of all FAKH programs and recommend effective change and/or improvements as appropriate.
- Through collaboration and industry best practices, develop new programs to meet our neighbors facing hunger where they are.
- Ensures all current health and safety standards are met. Ensures proper inspection, handling, storage and distribution, and accounting for all products in accordance with the Feeding America requirements/agreement, AIB, USDA and all applicable laws and regulations.
- Responsible for all property and assets assigned to or in custody of FAKH. Authorizes the purchase, installation, maintenance, and operation of all FAKH equipment and facilities within board parameters.
- Ensures sufficient food inventory is available including donated/solicited, USDA government commodities and/or purchased foods in order to fulfill the requirements of all FAKH programs with a focus on quality and nutrition.
- Establishes and maintains a standard network of agency partners consisting of 501-C3 non-profits and other organizations who are administering feeding programs to ensure a balance of equitable food resources throughout the FAKH service area in accordance to Feeding America standards.
Fundraising
- Ensure FAKH cultivates the funding necessary to meet the financial needs of each program and Strategic Plan initiatives through a comprehensive development plan that addresses long and short term goals.
- Maintain relationships with current individual key donor segments, corporation, organization and foundation donors.
- Cultivate new relationships/partnerships with FAKH supporters, for-profit entities with similar alliances, local community leaders, state agencies and federal government.
- Ensure all grant funding is optimized and required reporting is completed.
- Participate in written and spoken appeals regularly.
Public Relations/Advocacy
- Articulate a vision that inspires and supports the FAKH mission, vision and core values.
- Increase/improve the name recognition of the FAKH brand and mission throughout the entire service area through intensive public relations efforts.
- Serve as the food bank’s chief public spokesperson in articulating the hunger problem, root causes of food insecurity, the focus of needs, efforts to address the problem and the mission of consistently meeting the needs of our neighbors facing hunger.
- When appropriate, advocate constructive policy changes to benefit our food insecure neighbors.
Relationships
- Serve as the official liaison with Feeding America and serve on the Board of Feeding Kentucky.
- Ensure that FAKH is a leader and collaborates with Feeding Kentucky, food banks serving Kentucky and the Feeding America network.
- Manage relationship with Affiliate Food Bank to cover the eight most western Kentucky counties in accordance with Feeding America Affiliate Food Bank Agreement.
- Collaborate with area non-profits, government agencies and other key organizations whose core values align and could assist us in our fight to address and end hunger.
- Ensure regular communication and effective relationships with media along with government, community, public and private sector leaders to achieve the food bank’s mission, vision and strategic plan initiatives.
Qualifications
- Master’s degree or equivalent experience in food banking or non-profit management.
- Excellent writing and communication skills with experience in giving presentations.
- Proven track record in management and leadership required.
- Organizational financial management experience.
- Successful development/fundraising background.
- Non-Profit background a plus.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic and compassion for those in need.
- Enjoys working with people from all walks of life and embraces diversity.
Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.; Days and hours are flexible to fit the needs of the position requirements and FAKH mission. Regular travel throughout FAKH service area in company vehicle. Occasional travel state-wide and national destinations.
