Saving Food, Serving People: Food Rescue

There have been some great rescues in human history – Dunkirk, Apollo 13, the Kentucky floods of 2025. We are adding another mission to that list – Food Rescue. Through partnerships with food retailers, we save food that is still good to consume, but would otherwise be thrown away, and redistribute it to our agency partners. These efforts allow us to save good food from landfills and provide options for our neighbors facing hunger.

Last year we rescued over 6 million pounds of food – after all, food is what we do. But we can’t do it alone. We need our community to join the mission. Because community is who we are.

Join our mission today! Let’s make sure no food is wasted in the Heartland.

Hunger can affect health, development, and well-being.
Some common effects include:

Weakened immune system
Deficiencies in vitamins like A, C, and zinc make it harder for the body to fight off illness, so people facing hunger may get sick more often.
Stunted growth or development
Chronic lack of protein, iron, and other key nutrients in childhood can permanently affect physical growth and brain development.
Mental and Emotional strain
Chronic hunger can cause stress, anxiety, irritability, and difficulty concentrating, making every day tasks feel impossible.
