FAKH distributes over 185,000 pounds of perishable food amid windstorms in Central Kentucky

Feeding America, Kentucky’s Heartland (FAKH) has announced its total contributions in combating food insecurity amid windstorms that ravaged communities in Central Kentucky in March. Due to the storms, many families in FAKH’s service area were without power for a significant period of time and many lost perishable food staples as a result.

With the assistance of community partners and donors, FAKH distributed a total of 185,007 pounds of perishable food to affected communities in March and April. Of the total distributed pounds, 60,971 were donated perishable food valued at $117,064 and 124,036 pounds were purchased totaling over $107,673. These perishable foods such as meat, milk, eggs and cheese helped supplement over 616,000 meals for families in the 21 counties affected by windstorms in FAKH’s service region.

“Our staff and agency partners are grateful for the efforts of our partnering organizations, corporations and community members who provided nimble and immediate support to help relieve food insecurity in our region amid these storms,” said Jamie Sizemore, Executive Director of FAKH. “Losing perishable food staples was detrimental to many families in our region, and we at FAKH were committed to provide this assistance so they could focus on moving forward.”

FAKH received food donations from Perdue Farms, Kroger, Bel Brands, Dollar General Fresh and Tyson Foods. The organization also received monetary donations from United Way of Central Kentucky and from generous donors from throughout the state. In addition, FAKH used $27,752 from the Team Kentucky Nonprofit Assistance Fund grant for windstorm relief efforts.

“As soon as we learned of the storms’ impact on families in Central Kentucky, we felt a strong urge to offer assistance,” said Bill See, senior manager of community relations for Perdue Farms. “FAKH proved to be an excellent conduit to promptly provide nutritious food to those in need.”
